Sam George threatens DStv shutdown over pricing dispute

A brewing standoff between MultiChoice Ghana and the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations has intensified following a strongly worded response from sector minister Samuel Nartey George.

In a statement issued on September 5, 2025, MultiChoice Ghana clarified that while it continues to engage with the Ministry to find an “amicable solution” on DStv pricing, it has not agreed to any price reductions.

The company stressed that ongoing discussions aim to balance consumer concerns with the “viability of the DStv service” and confirmed its willingness to participate in the Ministry’s established working committee.

However, Minister Sam George hit back, accusing the pay-TV giant of disrespecting Ghanaians and reneging on earlier commitments to negotiate lower prices.

“Let me be clear,” he stated. “I have no intention to continue tolerating the disrespect to Ghanaians by DStv. If MultiChoice is not interested, as they claim in their last statement, in discussing a reduction in prices as they had indicated to me, we would proceed to effect the shutdown tomorrow as indicated.”

The Minister revealed that MultiChoice had initially requested the Ministry to suspend enforcement actions and expressed willingness to engage on pricing concerns.

He warned that if the company has now changed its position, the National Communications Authority (NCA) will move forward with regulatory enforcement.

“No company is above the law,” Sam George asserted. “When MultiChoice is ready to discuss price reduction, they can come to the negotiation table.

Until then, there is nothing for us to meet over. Ghana is open for businesses that respect our laws and institutions.”
