An Aayalolo bus lost control in Accra’s Central Business District on Monday, killing an elderly woman and injuring several others after crashing into traders near the COCOBOD building.
The accident, which happened around 3:30 p.m. on September 1, also damaged two vehicles — a sprinter bus and a pickup — before veering onto the pavement where traders were selling.
Witnesses say the collision with the vehicles may have reduced the bus’s impact on pedestrians.
Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who visited the scene, ordered traders to vacate the pavements immediately.
“From tomorrow morning, nobody should come and sell here again,” he said, blaming the tragedy on illegal street trading.
While police investigate, victims are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals. Traders, however, argue that relocating to Makola and Kwasiagwaso markets will hurt their businesses.
