MTN pushes 5G agenda, urges stronger gov’t-private sector collaboration

MTN Group is gearing up to launch fifth-generation (5G) mobile technology following strategic discussions with government and regulators, Group CEO Ralph Mupita has revealed.

Speaking at the Bright Conversations Series in Accra, Mupita described 5G as “a transformative technology” that will redefine connectivity and accelerate economic growth.

“With 5G, the potential for innovation is limitless. It will not just transform how people connect, but also how industries operate and how economies grow,” he said, highlighting its impact on education, health, agriculture, financial services, and e-commerce.

Mupita admitted, however, that the journey had faced hurdles, particularly debates over spectrum licensing and ensuring affordability without stifling innovation.

He stressed that 5G’s ultra-fast speeds, low latency, and ability to connect millions of devices would open new opportunities in AI, smart cities, and digital entrepreneurship. With a growing youth population increasingly reliant on digital tools, he said investing in digital skills alongside infrastructure was critical.

“For MTN, readiness is not the issue,” Mupita explained, noting that the company has already invested heavily in upgrading infrastructure, modernising towers, and forging partnerships to deliver next-generation services.

The CEO also called for stronger collaboration between government and the private sector, urging regulators to adopt transparent policies that attract global investment.

“There is an abundance of capital globally,” he said. “Money will flow to environments where the regulatory framework is clear, consistent, and enables innovation.”
