KT Hammond questions Ken’s claims of financing NPP

Former Trade and Industry Minister KT Hammond has responded to persistent claims from the camp of flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong that he is the sole financier of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

KT Hammond accused Ken’s supporters of “blurring the lines between party loyalty and money,” suggesting that some members are now being made to feel inferior simply because they have not contributed financially.

“These days, you make it look as though those of us who haven’t put millions into the party are less important,” Hammond said. “Is that how we built this party? Since when did financial contribution become the only measure of loyalty?”

While KT Hammond did not directly mention Kennedy Agyapong’s name, his remarks were widely interpreted as a direct response to claims often made by Ken’s camp.

He challenged them to present proof of their financial support during the party’s formative years.

“If anyone says they have financed this party, let them bring the evidence,” he declared.

“In the early ’90s when we struggled to raise money to make NPP relevant, where were they? Show us what you contributed when the party needed you the most.”

Mr Hammond went further, arguing that many of those now flaunting their wealth only became financially successful because of the opportunities the party provided.

“When NPP became formidable and eventually won power, those who today claim they are rich had nothing then,” he said.

“Thanks to this same party, they are financially comfortable now. But back then, when the party needed a real boost, they did nothing.”
