Ofanko, Sawambu roads to benefit from Big Push initiative

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the much-anticipated Big Push Program will officially commence next week, with groundbreaking ceremonies planned for three locations across the country.

Speaking during a media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the President explained that the first phase of the initiative will focus primarily on the road sector, which he described as having “deteriorated remarkably” over the past eight years.

According to the President, nearly GH¢14 billion from Ghana’s oil and gold revenues has been earmarked for the program this year alone.

He revealed that critical road projects—including the Ofanko and Sawambu roads, which have long suffered from chronic underfunding—have been transferred under the Big Push initiative.

These projects, he added, have already received a release of almost GH¢1 billion to ensure their speedy completion by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

President Mahama emphasized that the Big Push program is part of his broader agenda to lay the foundations for economic recovery while strengthening institutions to meet the demands of modern governance.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency, accountability, and the promises he made during the 2024 election campaign.

“My media colleagues, our research agenda remains on course, and I have remained unwavering in my commitment not only to the promise I made to you in the run-up to the 2024 elections, but to the principles of honesty, transparency, and probity and accountability that define good governance,” he said.

Looking beyond infrastructure, the President stressed that the program represents a larger vision of achieving economic independence and self-reliance for Ghana. He expressed determination to restore Ghana’s rightful place as a respected voice on the global stage, while ensuring improved service delivery for every citizen.

“With your continued trust and support, I am confident that we will not only meet these goals, but also build a nation that serves the hopes of this generation and the aspirations of generations yet unborn,” Mahama said, ending his remarks with a call for unity and national purpose.
