Why Abronye is on hunger strike

Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa has confirmed that Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has begun a hunger strike in police custody, describing the move as a protest against what his client sees as political persecution.
“Abronye is a man full of life. He knows that this is just mere political persecution, and certainly he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” Afoakwa said.
The lawyer explained that the decision to refuse food and water was both symbolic and practical.
“Yes, he is pursuing what he is pursuing in furtherance of democracy. Certainly, [he is on a hunger strike],” Afoakwa stressed.
He argued that the treatment meted out to his client has left him distrustful of the very people detaining him.
“Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people handling you in a manner as if you have committed a treasonable offence, when they give you water, will you take it? When they give you food, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” he added.
Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025, and remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court the following day. The police cited “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace” as the reason for the arrest, but have yet to provide full details of the case.
The court said the two-week remand was necessary to allow the prosecution time to complete its investigations. Abronye is expected to reappear before the court on September 26, 2025.
