Why Ghanaian youth may soon reject NPP and NDC – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned Ghana’s political class to take the concerns of the youth seriously, warning that disillusionment with both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) could spark an unexpected political shift.
Speaking at a public forum, Afenyo-Markin said the growing influence of social media has made it easier for young people to mobilize against the two dominant parties if they feel betrayed.
“This is a warning to those of us who are in political leadership,” he said. “The way social media is operating now, if care is not taken and the youths lose trust in the two political parties, they will take over and we’ll find ourselves in this hole.”
He stressed that politicians risk losing credibility if they downplay due process in governance.
“They will not listen to you because you have told them that there is no need for due process,” he cautioned. “And those, my colleagues in politics, who have ears should hear me and hear me well. It may be faster than we think if we don’t sit up to focus on governance. Otherwise, we will repeat this vicious cycle of, you do me, I do you.”
The Minority Leader painted a vivid scenario of a future where the youth turn their backs on both major political parties.
“One day, the youth will get up and say, you these two people, NPP, NDC, we realise that you are not serious. So when we vote for you, you come, then you misbehave, then you go, then another will come. We are tired of you,” he said.
