Prof. Gyampo leads Ghana at global maritime safety talks in London

Prof. Ransford Gyampo Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), led Ghana’s delegation to the 11th session of the International Maritime Organization’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC-11) in London, held from September 8–12, 2025.
The technical body of the IMO is tasked with reviewing codes and guidelines on the safe transport of bulk cargoes, dangerous goods, liquefied gases, and containers, while also addressing inspection regimes and new fuel safety standards.
This year, the spotlight was on the rising incidents of containers lost at sea, an issue with serious implications for supply chains, marine ecosystems, and the cost of port business.
Other agenda items included revisions to the IMSBC Code, updates to cargo-securing manuals, and new guidelines for emerging fuels like ammonia and hydrogen.
Prof. Gyampo, alongside Ms. Sylvia Asana Dauda Owu, Capt. Derrick Attachie, and Ms. Lydia Tsotsoo Odai-Tettey, contributed to deliberations with emphasis on how these technical outcomes affect Ghana’s trade competitiveness.
Recommendations from the session, including stronger inspection regimes, improved stowage planning, and harmonized standards for securing gear—will move to the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee for adoption.
“The global conversation on container safety is not just technical – it has a direct bearing on the competitiveness of our traders and the safety of our maritime space,” Prof. Gyampo said.
