This is bigger than politics – Barker-Vormawor announces vigil and march over galamsey crisis

Activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has called on Ghanaians to rise above partisan divides in the fight against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

In a statement shared on social media as sighted by MyNewsGh, Barker-Vormawor stressed that protecting the environment is not only a civic duty but also a spiritual mandate.

“The responsibility to protect and preserve the Environment is by divine assignment, ours as a people,” he wrote.

He cautioned against reducing the fight against galamsey to an electoral issue, arguing that the urgency of the environmental crisis transcends politics.

“Our responsibility to end Galamsey, does not end at elections. Nor does it begin after our party loses one. This is bigger than petty politics,” Barker-Vormawor said.

To highlight the seriousness of the issue, he announced a two-day event later this month.

On Sunday, September 21, a vigil will be held at the Revolution Square, followed by a march on Monday, September 22—a public holiday—to demand stronger action against the destruction of Ghana’s lands and rivers.

“On Sunday 21st September, we will have a vigil at the Revolution square, and on Monday 22nd (a holiday), there will be a march, calling attention to the urgency to our environmental crisis. Join us,” his statement concluded.
