Prempeh Agyemang I Airport expansion 90% complete – Minister confirms

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced key updates on ongoing and upcoming aviation projects during the latest edition of the Government Accountability Series.

Speaking on the status of the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport, Mr. Nikpe said;

“The runway, which currently measures 1,981 meters, is being extended to 2,320 meters to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and facilitate international flight operations. The project is 90 percent complete and will be ready by the end of the year.”

He also pointed to improvements in night operations as part of government’s 24-hour economy agenda.

“We have extended night operations at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport from 8 pm to 11 pm, and at Tamale International Airport from 6 pm to 10 pm. This will enhance passenger convenience and improve connectivity,” he noted.

Looking further north, Mr. Nikpe revealed plans to redevelop the Bolgatanga Airport.

“The Bolgatanga Airport will be redeveloped to accommodate jet aircraft, serving as a key gateway to the Upper East Region.

“This project will support critical sectors including trade, tourism, and mining. Studies and site assessments are currently underway to guide implementation.”

According to the Minister, the projects reflect government’s commitment to modernizing aviation infrastructure and boosting regional development.
