Nkrumah came to fight oppression — Nana Nketsiah calls for curriculum reform

Paramount Chief of Essikadu, Nana Kobina Nketsiah V, has called for a deeper commitment to the ideals of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, urging that they be embedded into the nation’s educational system.

Speaking at this year’s Nkrumahfest, the traditional leader stressed that the younger generation must be given opportunities to internalize the values that shaped Nkrumah’s vision for Ghana’s independence and development.

“When such an opportunity is given to the younger generation to imbibe this state of being, there is a strong affirmation and awareness that will make them grow into selfless, committed, and patriotic citizens,” Nana Nketsiah told the gathering.

“We cannot develop and be free if our hands are tied by our oppressors. Nkrumah came to fight oppression.”

The chief also challenged Ghanaians to reflect critically on how Nkrumah’s legacy is honored, cautioning against reducing commemorations to ceremonial events without practical impact.

“Each year we gather for Nkrumah. We hear the usual speech recitals, and then we return to our normal lives.

“So, what’s next after this programme?” he asked. “Are we going to carry on with our normal life, or live the thoughts and ideals of Osagyefo?”
