Bahubali was declared unfit to box — GBA’s Amin Lamptey

The death of Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali is still dominating maisntream discourse.
The 32-year-old passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, barely 11 days after his last fight.
Bahubali had entered the ring against Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12 in a super middleweight contest, which he lost in the eighth round. Reports suggest the boxer suffered internal bleeding from the bout, a condition that ultimately led to his untimely passing.
In a new development to the sad news, fresh claims emerging about the boxer’s fitness to compete.
Communications Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Mohammed Amin Lamptey, disclosed in an interview with Original TV that Bahubali had previously been warned against continuing his career.
“Abraham Kotei Neequaye checked Baubali and realized he is not fit for boxing. I’m telling you this time live on TV. He was told to stop fighting,” Lamptey revealed, referring to the former GBA president.
He further alleged that the GBA’s Technical Director, Shadrach Aquaye, and the Chairman of Promotions, Alhaji Alhaji Tophic, had also raised red flags. “In a Board meeting, they said Bahubali shouldn’t be allowed to fight because he is not fit to box,” Lamptey added.
A resurfaced video of former world champion Joshua Clottey advising Bahubali to quit boxing has only intensified the debate around the circumstances leading to his death.
Bahubali competed in both the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
He ended his career with eight professional fights, winning six.
