Haruna Iddrisu commits GHC 1bn to education infrastructure

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has underscored government’s commitment to expanding educational infrastructure across the country, assuring stakeholders that support will not be limited to elite schools.

Speaking at the opening of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG)’s 22nd Biennial Congress at Aburi in the Eastern Region on Monday, September 30, 2025, the Minister stressed the need to balance parental aspirations with equitable national investment.

“All of us want our wards in the best schools, justifiably so. But are we investing in expanding infrastructure in the Category ‘A’ schools?” he asked.

Mr. Iddrisu revealed that he had already approached the Minister of Finance to secure additional resources.

“Only this morning, I made a request to the Minister of Finance for an additional financing of GH¢300 million to be dedicated to expanding facilities in Category ‘A’ schools,” he stated.

He was quick to add, however, that the government’s priorities would not be skewed solely towards the so-called top schools.

“So, while spending GH¢300 million on Category ‘A’ schools, I’ll commit GH¢500 million to GH¢1 billion to other infrastructure across the country,” he assured.

The Minister also pledged to sustain support for academic research, a long-standing demand of the tertiary education community.

“We will honour book and research allowance,” he affirmed, drawing applause from members of UTAG.

The Congress, themed “Rethinking Higher Education Pedagogy and Funding in the Age of AI: Ethics, Equity and Development Impact”, brought together academics, policymakers, and education stakeholders to deliberate on the future of higher learning in Ghana amidst rapid technological changes.
