Confusion as Sam George’s DStv claim differs from MultiChoice’s statement

A recent statement by Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, announcing what he described as a major concession by MultiChoice Africa, appears to conflict with the satellite television provider’s official promotion details.
Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, September 29, 2025, the minister highlighted what he called an “unprecedented increased value offer” secured through government engagement with MultiChoice. He explained that subscribers would receive automatic upgrades at no additional cost.
“If you’re on the family package, which is currently valued at 190 Ghana cedis, DStv will automatically bump you up to Compact, which ordinarily goes for 380 Ghana cedis,” Sam George said.
However, an internal document from MultiChoice Ghana outlining its “We’ve Got You” promotion, scheduled to run from October 1 to December 31, 2025, suggests that the offer is part of a periodic customer reward initiative rather than a special concession negotiated with the government.
According to the FAQ document, the promotion is designed to give customers “even more value,” allowing new, active, and previously disconnected customers to view one package higher than the one they have paid for at no extra cost.
“To qualify, subscribers must make full payment for their current package and own an approved DStv decoder.
The document also lists eligible packages for upgrades, including Padi, Access, Family, Compact, and Compact Plus. Customers on each tier can move up one level during the promotion. For example, those on the Family package will be upgraded to Compact, while Compact subscribers will move to Compact Plus.
MultiChoice Ghana emphasizes that this campaign is part of its ongoing commitment to reward loyal customers and enhance their viewing experience, featuring local and international content, news, sports, and entertainment.
The contrast between the minister’s framing and MultiChoice’s official position has raised questions about whether the promotion is a result of government intervention or simply the company’s routine marketing initiative.
The promotion runs for three months, from October 1 to December 31, 2025.
