Seven confirmed dead in Ashanti mining pit collapse

A mining pit collapsed on October 1, 2025, leaving seven people dead at the Kasotie community in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

According to reports, about 30 residents had rushed to the abandoned mine in search of gold despite repeated warnings from the Assembly Member for the Kyekyewere Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine, who had cautioned that the site was a “death trap.”

The incident occurred around 8 p.m., with several escaping unhurt but 12 people trapped under the rubble.

Rescue efforts have since retrieved seven bodies, while four to five survivors are receiving treatment at the Mpasatia Hospital, confirmed the Deputy District NADMO Director, Augustine Gakpetor.

Ashanti Regional Correspondent Nicholas Osei-Wusu reports that the search is nearly complete, with little indication of more victims.

Authorities have urged residents to volunteer information on any missing relatives as rescue teams remain at the scene.
