Wontumi to appear before CID over Akonta Mining probe today

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, in connection with an ongoing probe into Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to him.
This development follows a caution issued by Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Friday, October 3, that the NPP chairman would be arrested if he failed to honour the invitation, noting that charges against him had already been signed.
According to the Attorney General, investigations into the case were delayed because some key dockets had been concealed during the previous administration, which slowed progress.
Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has, however, expressed surprise at the public warning. His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, speaking to Citi News on Sunday, October 5, confirmed that his client will appear before the CID as directed and described the Attorney General’s comments as unnecessary.
“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for, and we will be there at 10 a.m. at the police CID headquarters. This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said, we respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary,” he stated.
He further stressed that Chairman Wontumi has consistently cooperated with investigative bodies. “We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation,” he added.
The CID appearance comes on the heels of a separate encounter with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) earlier this year.
Wontumi was invited by EOCO as part of investigations into alleged financial irregularities related to mining operations. He complied with that invitation and provided statements to investigators during the session.
