New NGO empowers women to rebuild after abusive relationships

Ama Oduma Foundation (AOF), a Non-Governmental Organization, has reaffirmed its commitment to restoring hope and dignity to women who have survived various forms of abuse, helping them regain their independence and rebuild their lives.
The Founder of the foundation, Madam Joyce Ama Oduma Mensah, made this known in an interview with MyNewsGH.com reporter Hajia Asana Gordon, shortly after the official launch of the organization at Kormatse in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.
Madam Oduma Mensah explained that the foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of the elderly, children, and persons with physical disabilities who lack adequate care and support. As a native of Kormatse, she said she was inspired to bring this initiative to her hometown to support vulnerable children and the aged.
She expressed concern about the economic challenges faced by the community, noting that “Kormatse, which is a fishing community, only depends on the bumper fishing season to support their children. But after the season, parents struggle to cater for their children.”
To address these challenges, the foundation plans to establish an income-generating rental hostel to support orphans, the physically challenged, the elderly, and vulnerable children by providing access to quality education, basic needs, and opportunities for a brighter future.
Madam Oduma Mensah emphasized, “Ama Oduma Foundation is committed to assisting the aged, especially those who are physically challenged or battling chronic illnesses, ensuring they receive the dignity, care, and companionship they deserve.”
She added that the foundation will collaborate closely with the Department of Social Welfare, the police, and the Ghana Health Service to improve the living standards of vulnerable groups in the municipality. She also called for teamwork between parents, guardians, and schools in the area to support underprivileged children.
She assured the community of her commitment, stating that the foundation will work with relevant authorities to support families of vulnerable children to help them realize their full potential.
Madam Oduma Mensah further appealed to the general public and individuals to support Ama Oduma Foundation through donations and recommendations to enable the organization to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable.
“I want to use this opportunity to seek support from Social Welfare to introduce packages for women in these coastal areas so they can financially support themselves and their children,” she appealed.
The Head of the Social Welfare Department and Community Development of Mfantseman Municipality, Abena Serwaa Opare, pledged the department’s support for the foundation’s initiatives, assuring that they will work hand in hand to help AOF achieve its goals.
