Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram and Minister for Communications and Digital Innovation, Sam George, has sharply responded to comments made by the Ranking Member on Defence and Interior, Ntim Fordjour, regarding his call for a review of the age limit for military enlistment.
In a recent social media post, Sam George expressed disappointment at Ntim Fordjour’s interpretation of his proposal, describing it as misguided and unnecessary.
“Sometimes, just sometimes, silence makes one appear wise and knowledgeable,” Sam George began in a pointed jab.
“The logic espoused by my friend and colleague is so rich that I am lost for words. Let us celebrate the depth of his knowledge and the latitude of his wisdom.”
He went on to mock Fordjour’s remarks suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wanted to lower the age requirement to favor its members.
“NDC foot soldiers only qualify to be foot soldiers once they are 28 years old, and those between 18 and 27 years are not Ghanaian enough to serve.
“Massive respect to the NPP’s lead person on Defence and Interior. He is the best they have. They truly have the men,” Sam George wrote sarcastically.
The Ningo Prampram MP had earlier called for a re-examination of the maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services, arguing that many capable Ghanaians in their 30s are being unfairly excluded due to rigid age restrictions.
“I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services,” he stated.
“There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it. For God and Country.”
His comments followed the Ghana Armed Forces’ announcement last week that it had begun a new recruitment process, targeting the enlistment of 12,000 Ghanaians over the next four years.
However, Ntim Fordjour, who represents Assin South, dismissed Sam George’s proposal, suggesting it was politically motivated.
“Calls by Sam George and Dafeamekpor to review age restriction for military enlistment are to allow average NDC foot soldiers into the military,” he said.
