Four Visually Impaired and One Physically Challenged Graduates Called to the Bar

Four visually impaired and one physically challenged graduates have made history after being called to the Bar in Ghana, joining 824 other Lawyers-in-Waiting who were officially enrolled as Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Ghana. The remarkable event took place at the Call to the Bar ceremony held in Accra, where the Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, presented the certificates of enrolment to the new lawyers.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s legal education and professional inclusion, as it highlighted the growing accessibility of legal training to persons with disabilities.
The five graduates, despite their physical challenges, successfully completed their studies at the Ghana School of Law and passed the rigorous professional examinations required for admission to the Bar.
In his address, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie commended the new lawyers for their perseverance and commitment to justice, urging them to uphold the ethics of the legal profession and serve society with integrity. He also applauded the Ghana School of Law and its partners for fostering an inclusive environment that enables students of all backgrounds and abilities to excel.
“You have proven that with determination and support, physical or visual limitations cannot stand in the way of excellence,” the Acting Chief Justice said. “Let your stories inspire others to believe that the law belongs to everyone who is willing to learn, serve, and defend justice.”
The Acting Director of the Ghana School of Law also took the opportunity to congratulate the newly enrolled lawyers, describing their success as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity in legal education.
Families, friends, and well-wishers of the newly called lawyers celebrated the occasion with pride and emotion, acknowledging the extraordinary efforts the graduates had made to overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.
This year’s Call to the Bar brings the total number of lawyers enrolled in Ghana to over 825 new practitioners, who will now begin their careers as legal professionals, contributing to the nation’s justice system and democratic development.
The ceremony underscored a renewed national commitment to empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring that professional spaces in Ghana become more inclusive and accessible to all.
