Health Staff Destroy Equipment to Divert Patients to Their Own Hospitals—Minister

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has alleged that some health officials deliberately destroy health equipment because they have hospitals close to the government hospital.
According to him, some equipment was sent to hospitals, but it did not last for a year.
“Let me tell you this; it may shock you, but it is true. There are instances where the government buys equipment for a facility, and this equipment is deliberately destroyed because some people have facilities close to the hospital,” he told Omanahene Asante on Asempa FM.
The minister disclosed that the government intends to outsource equipment to various hospitals in the country, indicating that private individuals will be allowed to provide equipment and charge moderate fees for the people.
“We want to fight this by outsourcing equipment for the various hospitals,” he said. Adding that “private people will run these machines, and the government will not buy machines again. When the machine gets spoiled, the private individual will handle its maintenance. However, charges will be subject to the fees and charges of parliament and will be in line with NHIA tarrif”.
He says they believe that if private persons are allowed to run equipment in the various hospitals, they will take good care of the machines because they are their properties.
