Galamsey is now a 24-hour business — Boakye-Danquah alleges

Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah has called for a bold, indefinite ban on small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, accusing the government of lacking seriousness in tackling the environmental menace.
On Joy Prime, as monitored by MyNewsGh, the former Akufo-Addo spokesperson questioned why illegal mining continues uninterrupted, describing the situation as “a 24-hour operation destroying the nation’s water bodies.”
He painted a grim picture of miners working in rotating shifts around the clock, suggesting that government institutions are either complicit or helpless.
“It’s almost a 24-hour galamsey industry, morning, afternoon, and night. Is that what the President promised us?” he asked.
He accused “important persons at Jubilee House” of interference, hinting that political figures are protecting illegal miners for personal or political gain.
Dr. Boakye-Danquah’s comments came after reports of water shortages in parts of the Central Region and calls from some quarters for a 90-day moratorium on mining.
But he dismissed short-term measures, arguing that a temporary suspension won’t solve the systemic corruption enabling the problem.
“If you are in chaos, you take very strange measures. We are at that point,” he said.
