UP’s only goal is to hurt Bawumia – Dr. Zaato questions Kyerematen’s Political Motives

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, has cast doubt on the electoral impact of Alan Kyerematen’s newly formed United Party (UP), saying it lacks the power to disrupt Ghana’s long-standing political duopoly between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints, Dr. Zaato argued that the UP, recently rebranded from Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, will not significantly alter Ghana’s political landscape.

“This new UP Plus will have zero impact on the NPP–NDC duopoly. The ultimate objective is to hurt Bawumia, hatred and dislike of Bawumia,” he said, suggesting that the party’s creation is rooted more in internal political rivalry than in a credible national alternative.

Dr. Zaato’s comments add to a growing debate over whether Kyerematen’s movement can meaningfully challenge the dominance of the two main parties ahead of the next general election.

Meanwhile, Alan Kyerematen has defended his political realignment, describing his decision to leave the NPP as a necessary step toward creating space for capable individuals sidelined within his former party.

He explained that the Movement for Change, and now the United Party, was built on the belief that talent and ideas had been stifled within the NPP’s hierarchy.

“The matter speaks for itself,” Kyerematen told TV3 in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.

“If you didn’t hear about them when they were in the NPP and now they are excelling in the Movement for Change, it shows that they never had the opportunity to shine.”

According to Kyerematen, his new political platform is designed to foster meritocracy and innovation rather than internal suppression.

“Our movement was built to allow people to unleash their potential, to express themselves freely and blossom,” he said.
