Nobody owns the name ‘United Party’” – Boniface jabs NPP

Former Madina MP and leading member of Alan Kyerematen’s United Party, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, has dismissed suggestions that his group has wrongfully appropriated the historic “United Party” name, insisting that no political organization in Ghana owns exclusive rights to it.

Boniface said the name’s roots date back to the early post-independence era and that its symbolism belongs to Ghana’s political heritage, not any particular party.

“If someone says I cannot use ‘United Party,’ then it’s like saying as a Muslim, I can’t name my son Muhammad because someone else used that name first,” he argued on Hot Issues on TV3 monitored by MyNewsGh.

He added that the United Party’s revival under Alan Kyerematen represents a continuation of its founding ideals rather than an act of imitation. “We believe in the core values of the UP tradition unity, inclusiveness, and purpose and we want Ghanaians to buy into that concept,” he said.

Boniface dismissed threats of legal action from members of the NPP who view the UP as their ideological ancestor, saying he would welcome the opportunity to prove that the name belongs to the nation’s democratic legacy.

“Nobody owns the name. Even the NPP emerged from several traditions, including the Northern People’s Party, which could equally claim the initials NPP,” he said.
