The public deserves to know

New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Kow Essuman has called on President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to publish the full report of the committee that recommended the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, arguing that withholding it undermines public trust in the justice system.

“The Chief Justice and her lawyers do not have the purported report to date,” he revealed, describing the lack of transparency as troubling.

“Is the committee above the law? Is the committee above the Constitution? Release the report for everyone to scrutinise it.”

Essuman contends that the government’s silence on the committee’s findings suggests that its recommendations cannot withstand public examination.

“They cannot release the report because the world will see that the Chief Justice was removed on very frivolous grounds,” he asserted.

He argued that the decision has broader implications for judicial independence and governance, saying, “This is not about one person, it is about the integrity of the third arm of government.”

According to Essuman, if the committee’s conclusions were legitimate, there would be no reason to keep them secret.

“Accountability demands that the findings be made public. The people of Ghana deserve to understand why their Chief Justice was removed,” he said.

He reaffirmed his confidence in the Chief Justice’s decision to seek redress through legal channels, adding, “Anyone who reads the current application for Judicial Review in the High Court will be convinced that the committee’s work needs to be scrutinised.”
