GES mourns Garu headteacher killed in shooting

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep sorrow following the shooting incident that claimed the life of Mr. Bukhari Yahaya, the Headteacher of Garu D/A Primary and Junior High School, on Monday, October 20, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenny, GES condemned the act, describing it as “cruel and needless.”

The statement read, “Schools must remain safe spaces for teaching and learning, not scenes of brutality. Such acts have no place in our educational system and will not be tolerated.”

GES extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, staff, and students of the school. “We stand in strong solidarity with the entire Garu education community during this difficult time,” the statement added.

As part of immediate measures, GES has announced the temporary closure of Garu D/A Primary and JHS from Tuesday, October 21 to Monday, October 27, 2025, to allow staff and students time to manage the trauma.

The Guidance and Counselling Unit of the district will also provide psychosocial support.

GES further disclosed that it is collaborating with the District Security Council (DISEC) and other agencies to ensure safety as investigations continue.

“We encourage the people of Garu to remain calm and support GES in restoring peace to the school environment,” the statement concluded.
