After the perks, expect accountability- Edem Senanu urges leaders to face post-tenure scrutiny

Edem Senanu, Chairperson of the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC), has urged public officials to embrace post-tenure scrutiny and stop describing corruption investigations as witch hunts.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints monitored by MyNewsGh, Mr. Senanu said accountability should be viewed as an integral part of leadership.

“Those who are in leadership should not just enjoy the perks and privileges and think that’s it. After your perks and privileges, there’s time for accountability,” he said.

He argued that it is legitimate and necessary for institutions to investigate public officials after they leave office.

“When you finish your tenure, anticipate and expect an Oural; anticipate and expect that there will be an Attorney General who will take those cases to court,” he stated.

According to him, such a process should not be mistaken for political persecution. “Let’s stop calling all of this witch-hunting,” he urged.

“During your tenure, we may not have had the time to put the microscope to what you were doing. That’s why post-tenure accountability exists.”

Mr. Senanu also advised leaders to document their decisions properly to prepare for future scrutiny. “Keep your data. Make sure you’re ready to defend any actions you take,” he added.
