Telecel’s support shows real partnership, not empty promises

IMANI Africa has commended Telecel Ghana for providing what it called “the most tangible intervention” in the country’s telecom sector crisis, crediting the company for cushioning AT Ghana at a time of near-collapse.
The think tank’s latest analysis highlighted that in August 2025, when AT Ghana’s towers were shut down by ATC Ghana over unpaid debts, the National Communications Authority directed the migration of AT’s traffic to Telecel’s network, a move that ensured continued service for millions of subscribers.
“This was not a flashy acquisition announcement,” IMANI wrote.
“It was a practical cushion, a stopgap that kept the sector from collapsing.”
IMANI argued that Telecel’s intervention demonstrated the kind of operational credibility Ghana should prioritize when selecting partners for critical national assets.
“The partner who cushions in crisis, as Telecel has done, is often more valuable than the one who dazzles with billion-dollar pledges,” it said.
The analysis further suggested that with 30% state ownership and strong market operations, Telecel could serve as the natural consolidator to rival MTN.
“To build a competitive telecom environment, Ghana must reward competence and resilience over rhetoric,” IMANI concluded.
