Leave the details to the courts — Paul Adom-Otchere Advises AG

Journalist Paul Adom-Otchere has advised the Attorney General to exercise restraint when addressing the media on corruption-related prosecutions to avoid reinforcing negative public perceptions.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana monitored by MyNewsGh, he said that while transparency and accountability are necessary, excessive detail in official briefings risks politicising ongoing cases and fueling speculation.

“The Attorney General is entitled to brief the press,” he stated, “but when he gives grand details that suggest wrongdoing before court conclusions, it creates a perception problem.”

Adom-Otchere referenced past controversies, including the Cecilia Dapaah incident, as examples of how perception alone can damage political fortunes even when subsequent investigations clear individuals of wrongdoing.

He warned that such narratives, once amplified, are difficult to undo and can cost governing parties significant public support.

He further questioned the practice of mentioning specific presidential staff in official briefings, saying it unnecessarily exposes individuals who may not be directly involved in legal matters.

“It’s important to separate political communication from prosecutorial duties,” he noted, cautioning that blurring the two roles undermines confidence in the justice system.

Adom-Otchere concluded that Ghana’s democracy would benefit from a more disciplined communication strategy, one that prioritizes the rule of law over political optics.
