A boy steals plantain, gets 10 years; a minister steals millions, walks free

Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah is not happy about Ghana’s justice system, calling out what she described as the “unfair leniency” granted to corrupt public officials through plea bargains.
Speaking in an interview on Radio Mak monitored by MyNewsGh, she argued that corruption cases must not end with offenders simply returning stolen funds.
“Somebody takes our money, goes and does a plea bargain, returns some of the money, and goes home to drink whisky, whilst a small boy who steals plantain out of hunger is jailed for 10 years. Is that justice?” she questioned.
Jantuah called for a tougher stance that ensures both restitution and punishment.
“We want both. Bring the money and go in. If you bring it, we can reduce your sentence, but you must still face the consequences,” she asserted.
She emphasized that the money recovered from corruption could be used to rebuild hospitals and improve healthcare infrastructure.
“That money could build a hospital so a pregnant woman doesn’t have to sleep on the floor,” she said, lamenting the inequality created by corruption and poor governance.
