Wonder Madilo proposes digital recruitment to prevent tragedies like El-Wak

NDC Communications Team member Wonder Madilo has called for a complete overhaul of Ghana’s military recruitment process, proposing a digital appointment-based system to prevent overcrowding and loss of lives in future exercises.

Madilo described the recent stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium as a preventable disaster that exposed the inefficiencies of the current enlistment structure.

“Going forward, this has been my position,” he said on JoyNews’AM Show monitored by MyNewsGh.

“The enlistment process should not wait two or three years before announcing to a country of 33 million people, with a youth population of about 60 percent, who are willing and ready to go into the military, to gather at a single location just because of enlistment.”

He argued that the Ghana Armed Forces could take cues from how the National Service Secretariat manages its postings.

“You apply, get approved, and then book an appointment online,” he explained. “If you’re in charge of the database, you know you can only process about 100 people a day. Once the slots are full, others can book another day.”

According to Madilo, such a system would not only streamline the recruitment process but also prevent the kind of chaos that led to multiple deaths at El-Wak.

He emphasized that a technology-driven approach could help control numbers during screening and body selection, ensuring safety and order.

“This is the only way to avoid the needless loss of young lives who are only seeking an opportunity to serve their country,” he added.
