My monitors were off – Samini breaks down GJA awards stage glitch

Dancehall legend Samini has shed light on the technical challenge he faced during his appearance at the GJA Awards in Kumasi. According to him, the situation demanded calmness, experience and quick thinking.
He clarified that he was not originally billed to perform, but attended out of respect for a friend who is the current GJA president.
“My monitors on stage were off. Every live performer knows what that means. If you don’t have in-ear monitors and the stage monitors are off, you’re going to be dealing with echo and delayed sound,” he said in an interview on Hitz FM monitored by MyNewsGh.
He explained that the only option was to adjust his delivery: “I had to strategically sing two, three beats slower and time it so I wouldn’t go offbeat. With such a performance, you don’t want to stay too long on stage, so I found a nice exit.”
Despite the challenge, he was widely praised for handling the situation gracefully. Samini noted that technical issues happen but professionalism is key.
“Sometimes you just calm down and let the team fix things. Don’t drop the mic, don’t insult anyone. Just walk backstage and return when it’s sorted.”
Reflecting on earlier years, he recalled losing points in a 2004 competition after dropping the mic in frustration; “That taught me never to react out of anger on stage again.”
