Assafuah Raises Red Flags Over Pre-Approved Suppliers in School Desk Procurement

To promote transparency in the country’s procurement processes, the Member of Parliament for the Old Tafo constituency has questioned the decision by the Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs to adopt a restrictive tender process for the supply of standardised metal-framed school desks.
In a memo in our possession, all MMDCEs have been directed to opt for 8 companies, which the ministry claims to have examined their samples.
However, regardless of the recommendation, the companies are supposed to bid competitively for the supply of the furniture in full compliance with the Public Procurement Act.
But Ekow Vincent Assafuah Esq. has a problem with the decision of the Ministry to use restrictive bidding rather than open it up for all Ghanaian companies to bid for such a contract.
He holds the view that the government wants to sideline other businesses in the country to give its members contracts, which should not be the case.
To him, the government, while in opposition, criticized the then government for engaging in restrictive tenders, pointing to how it promoted corruption in the country, and urged the government to be transparent.
He is therefore shocked at the hypocrisy that, after taking over government, the NDC is engaged in restrictive tendering.
In a post shared via social media, he said, “Restrictions amidst a supposed competitive directive. All be lie. They are giving the contracts to their cronies. We will follow keenly”.
