Jobs must come before the Cathedral

The founder and leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrew aka Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has urged President John Mahama to refocus national priorities, arguing that the country’s current challenges require a shift from monumental projects to essential public services.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s Atinka Morning Drive with host Ekow Budu Sam, Rev. Andrew expressed concern about the government’s ability to meet the immediate needs of citizens. “When young people cannot find jobs and hospitals are overcrowded, the nation must rethink what truly matters,” he said.
He stressed that while places of worship remain important to national life, leadership must weigh such projects against urgent social needs.
According to him, investing in healthcare and other essential sectors would signal a government that is “committed to solving real problems rather than pursuing monumental projects.”
His comments come following renewed appeals from religious leaders. During a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Jubilee House on November 18, 2025, the Christian Council of Ghana reiterated its support for the Cathedral’s completion.
In their statement, the Council said, “While we are aware of the prevailing economic difficulties, we believe that the Cathedral’s completion under a transparent, accountable, and inclusive framework would serve as a spiritual and cultural landmark for generations to come.”
They outlined specific recommendations, urging the president to reaffirm government’s commitment to the project.
“We therefore humbly recommend your Excellency the following three things: that government reaffirms its commitment to the project, ensuring its continuation and completion with transparency in financial administration; that a broad-based funding structure involving churches, the private sector, and international partners be developed to reduce fiscal pressure on the state; and three, that the cathedral be positioned as a national interdenominational project that fosters unity among our people.”
