MP Assafuah challenges Deputy AG over ECOWAS court interpretation

Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah has criticised the Deputy Attorney General’s public commentary on the ECOWAS Court ruling involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, accusing him of selective reporting.
Assafuah shared a portion of the ruling in which the Court explicitly dismissed the government’s preliminary objection on all grounds.
He argued that the Deputy AG failed to acknowledge this aspect while commenting on the outcome.
In his reaction, Assafuah stated, “The ECOWAS Court ruled you out and stated that the Court has jurisdiction to hear the application.
“In fact, you were dismissed on almost all your objections.” He added, “Mr Deputy AG, can you respond to the application and stop this cherry-picking reporting? Is everything about optics for you?”
The ruling, which the MP highlighted, shows that the Court rejected the state’s argument that it lacked jurisdiction and affirmed that the substantive human rights claims brought by the former Chief Justice could proceed.
Assafuah ended his remarks by congratulating Justice Torkornoo, saying, “Congratulations Madam Torkornor.”
