Police explain Nyohini swoop, say rising chemical crimes triggered action

The Ghana Police Service has offered clarity on its early-morning special operation in Nyohini, Tamale, after multiple arrests on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

ASP Alhaji Bawah Abdul-Jalil, leader of the Special Operations Unit at the Office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), said the action was part of a nationwide strategy to stabilise security in areas experiencing increased criminal activity.

“We were deployed from the National Headquarters as part of our regular security interventions,” ASP Jalil explained.

“Our job requires us to move from different regions to different regions to maintain order and respond to emerging threats.”

He revealed that civil society organisations and some lecturers had recently raised concerns about a rise in criminal incidents, particularly those involving chemicals and related offences in the Northern Region. According to him, these reports prompted the intensified security operation.

“We have been monitoring the situation for a long time,” he said. “The feedback we received indicated a worrying trend, so Wednesday’s operation in Nyohini was necessary to restore safety and protect the public.”

ASP Jalil emphasised that the Nyohini swoop forms part of a broader, continuous effort by the Special Operations Unit to curb criminal activity and reinforce public confidence in the region.
