I want to be the first to go to prison

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed concern over what he described as threats from newly appointed judges under the current NDC government, suggesting they may jail members of the NPP with minimal provocation.

According to Afenyo-Markin, “If the speculations turn out to be true, I want to be the first to be jailed to redeem my party.”

He went on to criticize the judiciary’s recent actions, warning that the repercussions of such overreach could negatively impact Ghana’s governance.

Highlighting the judgment in the Abronye DC case, he pointed out flaws that, in his view, could have led to serious consequences.

“The judge employed the infamous Animal Farm quote in his judgement, which downplays his credibility and neutrality,” Afenyo-Markin noted during an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by MyNewsGh.

He also questioned the judicial reasoning behind the Kpandai parliamentary rerun, where the entire election was annulled despite complaints relating to only a few collation centres.

“I wonder what the basis was for the Kpandai rerun ordered by a judge.

“When the petitioners have only complained about a few collation centres, the judge annulled the whole election, calling for a rerun,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin warned that such visible flaws, often entangled in partisan politics, threaten the relevance of Ghana’s democracy and the credibility of its judicial system.

“These actions undermine public trust and could destabilize the democratic process if left unchecked,” he added, calling for judicial accountability and impartiality in decision-making.
