We must stop tampering with the constitution

Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has urged Ghanaians to exercise restraint when assessing the performance of election administrators, arguing that not every error constitutes incompetence or grounds for dismissal.
He referenced long-serving former Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, noting that despite his extensive experience, the 2012 election still recorded significant errors.
“Even after his long experience, what happened in 2012 was horrendous, but we did not label him incompetent,” the MP said in an interview on Metro TV monitored by MyNewsGh.
Highlighting the reforms introduced after 2012, such as ensuring every party receives its own pink sheet, he emphasized that effective election monitoring requires responsibility from political parties as well.
He pointed to the Supreme Court proceedings where the NDC could not produce its full compilation. “It became apparent they had not done their own compilation,” he noted.
The MP warned against a trend where personal dislikes or isolated mistakes lead to calls for removing public officials.
“Today someone may not like the height of somebody, and tomorrow someone will call for their removal over a comment they disagree with,” he said.
Hon. Baffour Awuah stressed that democracies thrive when institutions are strengthened, not when officeholders face constant threats of dismissal based on political convenience or public agitation.
