Let parliament honour Nana Konadu by enacting Spousal Rights law

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, Theophilus Dzimega Jnr, has urged Parliament to expedite the passage of the long-pending spousal rights law as a tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
Dzimega said enacting the legislation would honour Nana Konadu’s decades-long advocacy for women’s empowerment and legal reforms. He proposed naming the law after her to reflect her influence on Ghana’s socio-legal development.
“Both sides of the House should try and pass the spousal rights law. They should pass it in memory of her or make it Nana Konadu’s law or Konadu’s law,” Dzimega stated Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday,
He noted that Article 22 of the 1992 Constitution mandates Parliament to enact laws on spousal property rights, but the legislative process remains incomplete. Dzimega also recommended institutionalising her legacy through annual lectures on women’s rights and involving her children in sustaining her advocacy work.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings played a key role in championing the Intestate Succession Law of 1985 (PNDCL 111), which secured inheritance rights for spouses and children when a partner dies without a will. The reform, widely referred to as the ‘Nana Konadu Law,’ remains a landmark in Ghana’s family-rights framework.
