Nigerian comic actor and digital creator, Broda Shaggi, has reflected on the realities of growing up in the slums and the lessons hardship taught him. Speaking during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo monitored by MyNewsGh, he dismissed the idea that background determines destiny.
“It can be anyone. It can happen to anyone,” he said when asked what he learned from childhood. According to him, poverty has no fixed target. “It’s not about where you come from or how much your mother or your father has.”
Shaggi also spoke about his childhood after his father’s death. He explained that the family was already financially stretched long before the tragedy.
“Things were already tough because my dad was married to three women,” he said. He recalled living with a stepmother who stopped giving him basic school money. “They stop giving me money… it was tough.”
He noted that those experiences shaped his discipline and resilience. “Any moment, anything can change. That’s what growing up in the street teaches you.”
Despite his current success, Shaggi emphasized that challenges do not erase the past. “It can happen at any time,” he told Chude, insisting that young Nigerians must understand that circumstances can shift overnight.
