Sabinus says his father once called comedy a ‘stupid business’

Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has revealed that his journey into comedy was marked by early resistance from his father, who had envisioned a completely different future for him.
Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus recalled that his father wanted him to pursue law, a dream he tried but failed to fulfil.
“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport,” he said.
It was during his time at the University of Port Harcourt that he discovered skit-making. According to him, comedy started as an experiment to survive, not as a clear career path.
“It was on the campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming,” he admitted.
After graduation, Sabinus continued to hide his comedic pursuit from his father until he began appearing on event banners and promotional posters.
“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters,” he recounted.
His sisters later confirmed his new path to their father, sparking anger and disapproval.
“My sisters confirmed to him that I was into comedy. He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus said.
