GHC150,000 relief announced for families of El-Wak stampede victims

Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi has announced a GHC150,000 relief package for each of the six families who lost relatives in the El-Wak Stadium stampede.
Meeting the families at the National Square on December 1, Mr Genfi announced that the support includes GHC 50,000 for funeral expenses and GHC 100,000 as compensation.
He added that siblings of the deceased will be prioritised in the ongoing recruitment exercise.
Mr. Genfi also confirmed collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to provide additional assistance, including psychosocial support.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has expressed condolences and assured government support.
The stampede occurred on November 12 during the Ghana Armed Forces 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.
Preliminary reports indicate the incident was caused by a sudden surge of applicants breaching security protocols, resulting in six deaths and multiple injuries.
Victims are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” the GAF said.
