Every Ghanaian must be treated with dignity

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says recent policy actions demonstrate government’s determination to modernise Ghana’s correctional system and improve conditions for both officers and inmates.
Speaking at the Prisons Officers Training School during the graduation parade of Officer Cadet Course Intake 32, she stated that the commissioning of a new officer cohort “affirms our commitment to strengthening the Prisons Service.”
She emphasised that government wants the Service equipped with the right personnel and adequate resources to fulfil its mandate.
The Vice President highlighted major policy changes, including the upward adjustment of the daily feeding allocation for inmates.
“This is reflected in recent policy decisions, including an increase in the feeding allocation for inmates from GH₵1.80 to GH₵5.00, a necessary step because every Ghanaian, regardless of circumstances, must be treated with dignity,” she said.
She also referenced President John Dramani Mahama’s recent decision to grant amnesty to inmates.
“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s recent amnesty for 998 inmates further demonstrates his belief in second chances and the urgent need to decongest our prisons to allow for proper rehabilitation,” she noted.
According to her, government will continue to review conditions and standards across facilities as part of an overhaul aimed at improving infrastructure, retooling operations, and expanding capacity-building efforts across the Service.
