Connections don’t place anyone above the law

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has stated that the arrest of legal practitioner Martin Kpebu followed his repeated obstruction of officers performing their lawful duties.

Sammy Darko, Director of the Specialised Reporting and Compliance unit at OSP, clarified that the arrest was the result of Kpebu’s conduct at the agency’s premises and not linked to any ongoing investigation into his allegations against the Special Prosecutor.

“This is not the first time Mr. Kpebu has acted improperly toward OSP security personnel. After each incident, he publicly presents a completely different version of events,” Darko explained.

He added that Kpebu has a history of misrepresenting facts, citing a claim that 16 petitions were filed for the removal of the Special Prosecutor, which Kpebu later admitted was unverified.

Darko said that upon arriving at the OSP, Kpebu conducted interviews near the entrance despite repeated warnings by security officers to maintain distance.

“He reacted angrily to the reminder and insulted the guards. They issued a formal warning, but he insisted he could act as he pleased and threatened to report them,” Darko said.

Following standard protocol, Kpebu was arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice.

Bail was subsequently granted, and all procedures, including access to counsel, were reportedly followed. Darko emphasised, “Connections, public influence, or media prominence do not place anyone above the law.”

Kpebu is expected to report to the OSP for further investigations, while the inquiry into his allegations of corruption will continue on a separate date.
