Former President of Ghana John Agyekum Kufour has shared some of the defining moments in his contest against Jerry John Rawlings in 1996.
According to him, apart from the fact that Rawlings was superhuman and had control over everything, the women also said he was the handsome one in the contest.
Kufour said even his political party did not have any form of belief in him, so they refused to sponsor his campaign.
“How can you even campaign against Rawlings at that time? He had all the incumbency advantage. Even in some of the places, they said he was the handsome one. They said he is the son of a whiteman,” he recalled in an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso.
Kufour indicated that although Rawlings won the election, it took the Electoral Commission five days to declare the results, indicating how competitive the election was that year.
