Ghana will not surrender a single street to criminals

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to public safety, insisting that criminal elements will not be allowed to undermine national security.

His remarks came as he presented 40 special-purpose armoured vehicles to the Ghana Police Service on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

“Let me state clearly, our dear country Ghana will not surrender a single street, a community or any public space to criminals today, tomorrow or forever,” President Mahama declared.

He stressed that ongoing threats from organised crime, armed robbery and illegal arms trafficking will be met with firm state action.

“To those who insist on disturbing the peace of our nation whether through armed robbery, organized crime, illegal arms trafficking or gang activity, our message is simple; The Ghanaian state is ready, the Ghana Police Service is ready, the laws of this Republic will deal decisively with anyone who endangers the safety of our people,” he stated while handing over the vehicles.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu welcomed the government’s intervention, assuring that the vehicles would be deployed effectively to enhance law enforcement operations. He expressed gratitude to the President for what he described as a significant boost to police capability.

“We wish to sincerely express our profound gratitude to the government for thinking about us and prioritising our welfare. Our assurance to you is that the vehicles will be well-maintained and strategically deployed to achieve the intended objectives,” the IGP said.

He added that the new fleet will improve officer protection and operational readiness.

“I am particularly delighted that we are receiving these armoured vehicles which are going to ensure utmost protection for our officers as they gallantly execute our mandate of protecting lives and property and ensuring the safety and protection of all persons across the country,” he noted.
