High prices of essentials raise questions about economic direction — Bantama NPP Chairman

The Bantama Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Fiifi Mensah, says the recent surge in prices of basic commodities, particularly bottled water, reflects worrying economic conditions under the current NDC administration. However, he believes it may still be too early to pass a final judgement on the government’s performance.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Mensah expressed concern that despite repeated assurances that the cedi is strengthening against the dollar, market prices remain high.
“I’m not seeing things well. We keep hearing that the dollar is coming down, but there’s no reflection in the prices of items at the market,” he said. “Basic commodities are still expensive. Water prices are now high, and since everyone drinks water, we all feel it.”
He noted that while officials praise Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson for his efforts, ordinary citizens are yet to feel any relief.
“They say the Finance Minister is doing his best, but we should be seeing the reflection in the prices of basic amenities,” he said. “Instead, prices are going higher.”
Despite the challenges, Mr. Mensah urged Ghanaians to remain cautiously patient, suggesting that the situation might improve with time.
“Maybe it’s because this is the government’s first year,” he said. “Things are difficult now, but perhaps next year will be better.”
He added that the rising cost of living is not just his personal observation but a widespread concern shared by many.
“I am not the only one complaining. A lot of people like myself are complaining,” he stressed.
