Police launch investigation into viral kidnapping claim by American tourist

Police have opened an investigation into a viral video in which an American woman, identified in the video as Arianna Naomi Mackey, alleges that she was kidnapped and robbed by men she claimed were police officers on duty.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the woman stated in the video that “five masked men claiming to be police officers stopped me during a snap check in Accra and took my money.”
Police say preliminary checks reveal the video was recorded at a hotel in Accra where the woman and two companions were staying. Investigators confirmed that “they checked out of the hotel on December 5th, 2025, and airport records show she left Ghana the same day.”
CID officers contacted the alleged victim for further details, but she told investigators, “I’m outside the country now, and I didn’t get the names or the number plate of the officers.”
“When asked for the contact of a friend who was reportedly with her, she explained that the friend “does not want to be involved in the investigation.”
Police state that the woman has since deleted the viral video.
Attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages were unsuccessful, with investigators reporting that “she later blocked the team.”
Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo noted that efforts are ongoing through diplomatic channels to secure the woman’s cooperation.
She affirmed, “The Ghana Police Service treats such allegations very seriously and remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case.”
