There was nothing novel about his concession

Felix Kwakye Ofosu has refuted suggestions that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession in the 2024 elections was unprecedented, describing the narrative as “propaganda.”

His comments were in reaction to claims by Nana Akomea that Bawumia’s concession was a global example of democratic maturity.

“It is simply not true. They are clearly spinning history,” Kwakye Ofosu told Umaru Sanda on Channel One TV monitored by MyNewsGh. “Dr. Bawumia is not the first to concede ahead of the Electoral Commission’s official declaration. President Mahama did the same in 2016.”

He noted that concessions in Ghana’s Fourth Republic have varied and argued that the record speaks for itself.

“In 2000, Atta Mills conceded. In 2012, Akufo-Addo did not concede, he took us to court for eight months,” he pointed out. “In 2008, President Kufuor refused to concede and the entire central business district of Accra was empty because of tension.”

He insisted that the NDC’s 2024 concession was not only early but based on clear internal collation.

“By 7 p.m., we had determined through our own collation that we had won,” he revealed. “By 11 p.m., we knew the exact margin. There was no way the gap could be closed.”

Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the magnitude of defeat made concession inevitable.

“Nothing about that concession was extraordinary,” he said. “He had no choice, the defeat was massive.”

He added that the victory, though overwhelming, carried a message. “It was humbling,” he said. “Ghanaians will no longer tolerate bad governance.”
