The parties did not invite the Asantehene

Martin Amidu has raised concerns about the ownership and legitimacy of the Bawku mediation process, arguing that the principal parties to the conflict did not initiate the Asantehene’s involvement.

According to the former Attorney-General, both the Bawku Naba and the Mamprusis, acting directly or through the Nayiri, did not invite the Asantehene to mediate or arbitrate their dispute.

“In both cases, President Akufo-Addo and President Mahama invited the Asantehene,” he stated, adding that the parties merely consented as a matter of courtesy to government.

Amidu further questioned the decision to hold a high-profile presentation at Jubilee House without the presence of the direct conflict parties.

“The Bawku-Naba and the Nayiri who are directly affected by the mediation process are not invitees attending the widely advertised concluding circus,” he noted.

He asked what purpose would be served by presenting the report to institutions and diplomats while excluding those whose dispute is being addressed.

“For the parties to be absent and the nation to be invited raises serious questions about the intention of the process,” Amidu said.
