‘A clear attempt to shield NDC officials’ – Godfred Dame slams AG over case discontinuation

Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has strongly criticized the current Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of using his office to discontinue legal cases in a bid to exonerate officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) implicated in corruption and other offenses.

In a detailed press statement, Dame took issue with the recent nolle prosequi (discontinuation) of high-profile cases, questioning the motives behind the decision and warning of its implications for Ghana’s justice system. He argued that the move appears politically motivated rather than being based on legal merit.

Dame described the abrupt termination of cases involving former NDC officials as a deliberate attempt to whitewash individuals accused of wrongdoing, effectively erasing years of prosecutorial work aimed at holding public officials accountable.

“These developments irresistibly point to only one conclusion, a calculated preconceived ploy on the part of the NDC to wipe out all criminal cases pending against its leading members and officials in the John Mahama government, declare them of wrongdoing, not by the court, but through their Attorney General,” he said.

“The actions of the current Attorney General signal a dangerous precedent, where political considerations take precedence over the rule of law,” Dame added.

The former A-G emphasized that these cases were initiated based on credible evidence gathered through due legal processes, stressing that justice should not be sacrificed for political expediency.

Dame further expressed concerns that the wholesale discontinuation of cases could weaken Ghana’s fight against corruption, as it sends a signal that politically connected individuals can escape accountability when power changes hands.

He urged the public and legal fraternity to remain vigilant, cautioning that justice must serve the nation, not political interests.
